Donation via Furusato Nozei
(Higashikawa Town Shareholder System)
Through a partnership agreement with Higashikawa Town (located in Kamikawa District, Hokkaido), donors can indirectly provide financial support to the Walking Together Hand-in-Hand with Children Foundation by selecting the specific project designation “児童虐待に関する支援・防止啓発事業”※ when making a donation to Higashikawa Town via the Furusato Nozei (also known as ‘Hometown Tax’) system either as an individual or as a corporation.
※Meaning: support for survivors of child abuse; prevention and raising of awareness for this issue.
As this falls under the official Furusato Nozei framework, donations from both individuals and corporations are eligible for tax credit.
*Corporate Furusato Nozei:
While the individual version of Furusato Nozei is well-known in Japan, a corporate version also exists. This system allows companies to support regional revitalization projects led by local governments while receiving substantial tax benefits. For further details on this system, please refer to the reference websites at the bottom of this page.
With Corporate Furusato Nozei, companies can typically donate up to approximately 1% of their taxable income (before deducting taxes). After donating and calculating all the relevant tax deductions, donors will usually end up bearing approximately 5% of the donation amount as their own costs.
When combined with the tax relief effect from deducting the donation as an expense (approximately 30% of the donation amount), the expanded tax credit (up to 60% of the donation amount) introduced by the tax reform in FY2020 means that up to approximately 90% of the donation amount can be reduced, effectively compressing the burden to the donor company down to 10% or less.
